FAQs - HEATING AND COOLING
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our Michigan heating and cooling customers always have lots of questions.  Here are a couple of them, with the answers!

Question:  I have NO HEAT - forced air furnace - what can I do?

Answer:  Check the following:  or call 313-381-2665 to schedule a furnace repair or service.

Alert Heating and Cooling Inc. offers heating and cooling installation, service, and repair for the Downriver Michigan communities which include Allen Park, Brownstown, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Grosse Ile, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge, Riverview, Rockwood, Romulus, Southgate, South Rockwood, Taylor, Trenton, Westland, Woodhaven, and Wyandotte.

Check the furnace filter, is it clean?

Is the thermostat in HEAT mode? If the thermostat is digital, most of them require new batteries every two years.

Check circuit breaker or fuse.

Is the switch at the furnace on?

If you had the blower door off, most furnaces require the blower door to be in place correctly. If the blower door is ajar the blower door switch will not allow the furnace to run.

If you have a 90+ high efficiency furnace and it is very cold out or very snowy you may want to check the 3” PVC pipes that go outside, see that they are unobstructed of snow, ice, paper cups, wasp nests, GI Joe action figures or anything else that may be in there.

Question:  I have NO AIR CONDITIONING what can I do?

Answer:  Check the following:  or call 313-381-2665 to schedule an air conditioner repair or service.

Check your circuit breaker or fuse.

Outside on the house is a gray electric box.  Normally this is a fuse disconnect which means it needs to be opened, different brands open differently.  Then once inside there is a handle, pull out, turn it around and you will see two fuses.  Check the fuses and replace them if bad.

Check your digital thermostat, it may need new batteries.

Keep your outside condensing unit clean: turn off thermostat, take a garden hose spray the outside unit down for about 2 minutes, or until any debris is washed off.  Let dry for 10 minutes, and then turn your thermostat back on.

Keep basement registers CLOSED in the summer.

If you have a condensate pump, we suggest putting a cup of bleach in the pump once a month, winter and summer.
